Grand Island Man Killed in Head-on Collision

Three Family Members Also Hospitalized

North Elba, NY (WBEN) New York State Police say that a Grand Island man was killed in a head-on collision near Lake Placid in the Essex County town of North Elba just after 9:00 Saturday morning.

Authorities say that a car driven by 50-year-old, Kevin Maras of Grand Island was traveling eastbound and struck a westbound vehicle operated by 62-year-old, Rene Castonguay, of Quebec, Canada.

Both Castonguay and Maras were pronounced dead at the scene.  51-year-old Heather Maras suffered neck and spinal injuries while 18-year-old, Sierra Maras was also hospitalized for hip and leg injuries Both were transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont. 16-year-old, Ashley Maras was transported to the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake for facial lacerations.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
