Final: Bills get blown out by the Pats at home, lose 41-17

October 23, 2016 - 8:40 am

The Bills would enter Sunday extremely short handed due to injuries and it would show as the Bills were blown at home by Tom Brady and the New England Patriots 41-25 at New Era Field.

Here's how it played out.

The Bills would lose the coin toss for the first time this season and would start the game on offense.

On their first offensive possession in the rain, the Bills would come out eartly on the ground without their top offensive weapon in LeSean McCoy. No matter, Mike Gillislee who has filled in admirably while McCoy has been hampered with a hamstring injury, got it going early breaking off a 28-yard run up the left sideline. The Bills would cap off a 10-play, 70-yard drive with a 23-yard Dan Carpenter field goal to get the score to 3-0.

That's when Tom Brady and the Patriots offense would go to work. The Bills defense would do a nice job not giving up the big play but Brady and company would dink-and-dunk their way down the field 14-plays, soaking up over six minutes enroute to a 9-yard touchdown pass from Brady to Danny Amendola. On the drive, the Patriots would convert four straight 3rd down opportunities.

On the very next drive, the Bills would start with difficult field position and go three-and-out. They would punt in the shadow of their own goal post, giving the Patriots great field position to start their next offensive possession. After a few penalties from each team, on third down once again, Brady would find former Bill Chris Hogan streaking down the left sideline for a 53-yard pitch and catch to push the score to 14-3.

The Bills would have issues executing once again going three-and-out for the second consecutive drive and put Brady in good field position once more. This time, the Bills defense would come up big and force a punt. However, both teams would struggle to get things going once again, as the Bills would pile on another three-and-out followed by a third down sack on the Patriots ensuing drive at the 8-minute mark of the second quarter to give the Bills the ball at around midfield.

The Bills were on the verge of another three-and-out before a huge defensive pass interference on Bills reciever Justin Hunter gave them a much needed first down to give their defense a rest. A beautifully executed wheel route to Reggie Bush up the right sideline on the very next play put the Bills in the red zone for the second time of the game. They'd finish off the drive with 3-yard Mike Gillislee touchdown up the middle to widdle the score to 14-10.

Right after the Bills had gotten it to within one score, Tom Brady would find Rob Gronkowski for his 69th career touchdown. Brady would find Gronkowski in man-to-man coverage with Nickell Robey-Coleman and take advantage of a mismatch converting a 53-yard seam route for a touchdown. That would extend the Patriots lead to 21-10.

The Bills would put together a nice 2-minute drill on their final drive to get themselves in position to put another score on the board before the half but Dan Carpenter would miss his 49-yard attempt giving the Patriots good field position to tack on another score of their own. Wouldn't you know it, the Patriots would put themself in position for a 51-yard field goal try and Steven Gostkowski would convert as time expired to push the score to 24-10 at the half.

The second half would start the same way the first half ended; with a big play from the Patriots. This time however, it would come by way of the Patriots special teams as Danny Amendola would bring the opening kicoff of the second half all the way down the Bills 25-yard line. Two plays later, Brady would find Julien Edelman in the flat for 12-yard touchdown after only two plays.

On the next drive, the Bills were on their way to another three-and-out before Colton Schmidt would drop the snap on 4th down, pick it up and miraculously run for a first down extending their drive. Tyrod Taylor and the Bills offense would convert that play by Schmidt into points when Taylor would scramble 26-yards for a score to get the score to 31-17 midway through the third quarter.

But it was again the Patriots offense that would extinguish any hopes of a comeback when Tom Brady and company drove the ball 75-yards over 12 plays that was capped by a 1-yard LaGarrett Blount touchdown run. The Bills offense would attempt to respond again, driving the length of the field before being stopped on fourth down in the red zone when Tyrod Taylor just over throws an open Charles Clay in the end zone.

The Patriots offense would yet again convert a drive into points when they took another seven minutes off the clock, driving the ball over 75 yards on 13-plays that was capped off by a 32-yard Steven Gostkowski field goal to stretch the lead to 41-17 Patriots. A few possessions by each offense and their back ups and a garbage time touchdown saw the Bills fall to the Patriots at home 41-17.
