Errant tweet inspires "National Blue Cheese Dressing Day"

'Bobbing' for wings in pools of blue cheese

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN/AP) — The founder of Buffalo's annual chicken wing festival is offering foodies another reason to indulge — with the creation of National Blue Cheese Dressing Day.

The inaugural celebration is today.

Founder Drew Cerza, known as Buffalo's "Wing King," says the idea for a national holiday grew from a tweet sent out on National Ranch Dressing Day in March. The post from Frank's RedHot sauce paired buffalo wings and ranch dressing.  "That's blasphemy in Buffalo", said Cerza.  In Buffalo, the birthplace of the wing, blue cheese is the preferred dip.

Cerza says he googled it and found there was no National Blue Cheese Dressing Day.  He enlisted Frank's RedHot sauce to conduct a survey and it turned out that 90% of people wanted a national observance for blue cheese on 7-1-6 Day.

Did Cerza go through the process of getting blue cheese on the national calendar?  "I don't believe in processes, I just do things" said Cerza.  "I will just ask for forgiveness, not permission".

In honor of Blue Cheese Dressing Day, the team's blue cheese character mascot will be ceremonially inducted into the Buffalo Wing Hall of Fame.

Cerza has proclaimed today "Ranch Amnesty Day".  Anyone who brings an unopened bottle of Ranch dressing, or a non-perishable food item to Coca Cola Field, will get a Buy 1/Get 1 ticket to the 7:05pm game.

Fans at the game will also have a chance to bob for wings in pools of blue cheese dressing.  A little over the top?  Cerza says not at all. "It's a fact of life that people will do anything for a free t-shirt".
