Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Early voting is coming to New York, and the Erie County Board of Elections is getting ready with more than three dozens sites for you to cast your ballot before the November general elections.

Republican Commissioner Ralph Mohr and Democratic Commissioner Jeremy Zellner agreed to one polling place for approximately every 16,000 voters, a total of 37 locations.

“Our goal is to make early voting as convenient as possible,” Mohr said. “Voters who don’t have public transportation or who may live in rural areas shouldn’t have to waste time and money on travel. We believe these locations answer those concerns and go above and beyond what the state requires.”

“New York historically has among the lowest turnouts in the nation, and early voting will make it possible for more residents to take part in the electoral process,” Zellner said. “This list makes sense demographically and geographically, and we look forward to a very successful early voting debut.”

Early voting was one of a package of election reforms adopted by state lawmakers in January. It goes into effect for the 2019 general election and will include primaries starting in 2020.

Will it increase turnout? "That's the theory but the actual practicality is wait and see," says Mohr. Zellner notes New York has had some of the lowest turnout in the nation, and it's tough to cast a ballot. "What we hope to have is eliminate somebody who couldn't go out and vote on Election Day to have nine days before to vote. This doesn't seem to affect turnout in many states, but we'll have to wait and see what happens," says Zellner.

Absentee ballots will also be available this year. But in any case, both Mohr and Zellner say once you've cast your ballot, there's no going back and changing it.

This year’s nine-day early voting period begins Saturday, October 26. Election Day is Tuesday, November 5.
