BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - While the Erie County Board of Elections is preparing for the 2019 Election, they are also in the midst of preparing for a new feature for voters in New York that will begin next month: Early voting.

Early voting in Erie County will begin on Saturday, October 26 and run through Sunday, November 3 at dozens of locations across Erie County.

"Within Erie County, you're able to vote at any of the early voting sites within the county," Republican Elections Commissioner Ralph Mohr said. "We have 37 sites in Erie County where you can cast your ballot early. It doesn't matter where you reside in the county, you can go to any of those early voting sites and cast your ballot."

That means someone who works in Hamburg but lives in Amherst could cast a ballot during their lunch break or any other available time during early voting hours. Early voting is open from noon to 9 p.m. on weekdays and noon to 6 p.m. on weekends.

"We're trying to make it very convenient and accessible for the voters in Erie County," Mohr said.

It also means no more barriers, according to Democratic Elections Commissioner Jeremy Zellner.

"Now, they're going to have ten days to get out there any vote," Zellner said.

The board of elections has already prepared for situations of voter misconduct such as double voting. Zellner and Mohr both told WBEN that poll books will be electronic. When a person signs in to vote once, they'll be unable to sign in again, including on Election Day.

"The poll books will be up-to-the-minute uploading," Zellner said. "When the yshow up for election day, their name will say 'Already voted in the book'. It's a pretty good system. Obviously, security is critical for us. We were very thoughtful in the process in finding a vendor for the software."

The company being used for the electronic pollbook, Tenex Solutions, is already operating in states including California, Kentucky, Ohio, and Florida.

Mohr said that once you've voted once, you can't change your mind and attempt to vote again.

The early voting has required more resources for the Erie County Board of Elections. Mohr said that is cost them an additional $2-3 million for the equipment and staff training.

Election Day 2019 is November 5.
