Deadly Stabbing and Shooting in Batavia

Violence occurred on troubled Central Avenue

Batavia (WBEN) - One man is dead and another under arrest following a shooting and stabbing incident on Central Avenue in Batavia late Thursday.

When police arrived on the scene, there was a stabbing victim in the street who was transported to the hospital.41-year-old Terry Toote died of his wounds. A second victim of a gunshot wound was transported to the hospital. 30-year-old Nathaniel Wilson, Jr. is charged with second degree murder.

Assistant Chief Todd Crossett with Batavia Police tells TheBatavian it's unclear if this deadly violence is related to violence earlier this week in the area that involved a baseball bat and a pistol.  "Anyone with information is asked to call 911 and then we will get an officer out to talk with you as soon as we can," Crossett said.

In recent weeks, Batavia Police has given Central Avenue more attention, Crossett said, with increased patrols during the day and patrols stationed on the street when available at night.

Police say a third person shot Wilson. They have a person of interest in connection to Wilson's shooting but they are not releasing any names at this time. They are currently tracking down leads and interviewing witnesses in order to draw up charges.

Police say they've received multiple calls about fights in the area over the past few weeks, and several of those fights involved weapons. While it's unclear whether those calls were connected to Thursday's shooting-stabbing, they prompted the Department to install a video surveillance camera in the area and enhance street lighting. Police say that video, along with video provided by anonymous witnesses were instrumental in helping them determine what happened at the scene Thursday night.
