(WBEN) - Governor Andrew Cuomo is proposing making an addition to the state flag, and wants Albany lawmakers to work on making the change this session.

During his State of the State address last week, Cuomo talked about adding a familiar Latin phrase to the state seal and flag.

"On the first seal of the United States of America, they said it in three simple words. 'E Pluribus Unum,' out of many, one," Cuomo said during his address. "This federal government and our nation have seemed to forgotten that central American principle."

Under the proposal, “E Pluribus Unum” would appear under the word “Excelsior,” according to the governor’s spokesperson, who added the cost of this change would be minimal as the state often changes out old, flags with new ones.

Governor Cuomo's office says he would like to put the idea in his budget proposal.
