(WBEN) The race to challenge Governor Andrew Cuomo is expected to kick off in a big way this week with Republicans Harry Wilson, Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro and State Senate Majority Leader John Di Francisco all saying they would have an announcement on their efforts before Christmas.   Assembly minority leader Brian Kolb has already announced his candidacy, and already in recent days the region has hosted the sole Democrat of a few who have said they could challenge Cuomo in a Democratic Primary.

Former State Senator Terry Gipson visited Buffalo Saturday to tout his candidacy as a progressive to challenge Cuomo from the left. . Gipson met with representatives of Liberty Union Progressives-- the offshoot of the Buffalo for Bernie Sanders group.

Kolb appeared on Hardline with Dave Debo, the WBEN Politics Program (Sunday 10am- 12 noon) :

Former Erie County Executive Joel Giambra has told sources that he is considering a run and would definitely enter the race if Wilson - the perceived frontrunner for the nomination according to many state officials and analysts -- declines.   Former candidate Carl Paladino has also said he might run again.

On the Democrats' side, Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner and actress Cynthia Nixon of "Sex and the City" fame are mentioned as possible challengers to Cuomo.  But like Kolb, only one candidate has so far entered the race.
