BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - Erie County Clerk Mickey Kearns is calling on the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles to fix a significant mistke with its license renewal notifcations.

Clerk Kearns says the NYS DMV is not alerting drivers of the proper document that are required for a Real ID or an Enhanced Driver License. He says this affects thousands who change their name since the last time they renewed.

"When the State of New York sends you a form in the mail and says this is what you need-you need a birth certificate, you need your social security card and then if you come here and they said oh by the way you need a marriage certificate, I know myself I would be quite upset and know many that have been upset over this," Clerk Kearns said.

Clerk Kearns understands the DMV is a frustrating place for many and wants to make the process go smoother.

"We don't want people to wait 20 minutes only to find out they have to go home for a document that they weren't notified they needed," Clerk Kearns said.

Kearns says that all local DMV's will now have Renewal Information Cards available and the information will be on the Erie County Clerk's website.
