Tonawanda, NY (WBEN) - The City of Tonawanda is taking action to prevent more tractor trailers from crashing into a low CSX bridge on Young Street.

Mayor Rick Davis issued an executive order banning large tractor trailers from traveling on Young Street between Fillmore Street and Twin Cities Highway. The ban takes effect immediately and will last until other safety options are explored.

Over the course of the past month, three different tractor trailers have struck the bridge.

"A lot of these truckers weren't paying attention to the road or their truck GPS," Davis said. "I was on the radio last week saying you can't fix stupid. Well, we're trying to fix stupid."

Davis said that City of Tonawanda Police will be patrolling the area and enforcing the ban by handing out tickets. A meeting on March 25 will discuss further steps and resident concerns about the bridge.
