BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - Assemblyman Ray Walter kicked off his seventh annual "Christmas in July" toy drive on Friday morning at Oishei Children's Hospital.

Donations of new, unwrapped toys will be accepted at the assemblyman's district office in Williamsville plus other locations through July 25.

"Every year we think about Christmas in July," Walter said. "Why we do it in July is because you don't normally think about toys for kids this time of year. This is the toughest time of the year to be in the hospital. When everybody is off at summer vacation, going to the beach, having fun in their pools and parks, there's kids here stuck in the hospital. If we can bring just a little bit of a smile to their face. A little bit of joy working with a child life specialist in delivering these toys, then we've done a great thing."

Amherst libraries will also be collection points. There will be a bin at both locations and you can contact Walter's office to schedule a pickup.

"In the past we've had people host parties where you have to buy a new, unwrapped toy," Walter added. "Then we go and pick up barrels and barrels of toys."

Additional information about the toy drive is available by calling 634-1895.
