BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - The Buffalo Police Department's K-9 Training Facility next to Conway Park on Louisiana Street will be renamed in honor of fallen police officer Craig Lehner.

Lehner died last October during a training mission with Buffalo Police's underwater rescue team. A manhunt for Lehner immediately began after he went missing. He was found deceased several days later.

Lehner was a nine-year veteran of the Buffalo Police Department. He was also a full-time K-9 officer and previously served in the Army National Guard.

Brown also announced that Shield has a new full-time handler. Officer Matthew Richards, a ten year veteran of the police force, is now the handler for the German Shepherd. The mayor also announced a 1 1/2 year old German Shepherd was named "Lehner" in honor of the fallen police officer, and will live with its new handler, Officer Jared Domarcki.

The department's K-9 unit now has seven handlers with seven dogs.

Monday's announcement was a preview of the actual re-naming ceremony, which will take place at a later date.
