Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Buffalo Police say a possible kidnapping near Futures Academy turned out to be a hoax.

Capt. Jeff Rinaldo says a sixth grader reported a boy, age 5 or 6. was taken Friday afternoon as she was taking the boy to a school bus. Rinaldo says after further questioning, the sixth grade girl confessed to making up the story. "They're still in the interviewing process to find out why," says Rinaldo. He says there's a specific investigatory process, and police found there was a fact pattern the girl could not get out of.

Several police agencies helped in a massive search. More than 100 officers were involved. "The Erie County Sheriff's Office got Air One fueled and in the air in five minutes. Transit Police were on scene within five minutes. The FBI was here within 45 minutes and Cheektowaga Police in an hour," says Rinaldo.

As far as possible sanctions, "That'll be a question better left to the district. She is below the age where criminal charges could be filed. I would be more concerned to figure out what would cause her to do this," notes Rinaldo.
