BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and Fort Erie Mayor Wayne Redekop kicked off the festivities for the 31st annual Fort Erie Friendship Festival on Thursday at City Hall.

The Friendship Festival recognizes the friendship between Buffalo and Fort Erie by highlighting the cultural and economic trade that both regions established and continue to grow.

The Fort Erie Friendship Festival was created to help celebrate the bond between the United States and Canada since the end of the War of 1812.

"Certainly the economies of both of our communities are dependent on the free-flow of tourists across the border," Mayor Brown said. "I know that on the Buffalo side, we get many visitors from Fort Erie and from Ontario to the City of Buffalo that shop at our retail establishments, that come to restaurants, bars, and entertainment and cultural ventures."

This year's festival takes place from July 13-16 at Mather Arch Park in Fort Erie.
