Buffalo Airport: Open and Operating

Getting Back On Its Feet after Storm Havoc

March 15, 2017 - 11:53 am

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - Buffalo Niagara International Airport is getting back on its feet.   Runways are open and operating.  The message board was full of canceled flights Wednesday morning, but the situation is getting better with each passing hour.  Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority Public Affairs Director Doug Hartmeyer said there have been more canceled flights than active ones, through mid-day.

"It was surreal to see a virtually empty airport Tuesday and Wednesday morning, especially with the NCAA Tournament coming into town", said Hartmeyer.  "It was kind of eerie when normally there would have been a lot of hustle and bustle".

Approximately 9 thousand flights were canceled across the Northeast this week due to Winter Storm Stella.  Hartmeyer said "as long as planes can get here, we can accept them".
