BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - The initiative to improve bicycle safety for children throughout Buffalo will be increased, according to Mayor Byron Brown.

Brown, who addressed the media at the North Buffalo Community Center on Friday, announced that more bicycle racks will be installed around the city, including racks at 30 city-funded community centers.

"We plan by next spring to install another 200 bicycle racks at a cost of $100,000 to make sure that our children, when they come to community centers, will have their bikes in safe, secure places," Brown said.

Four-hundred bike racks have already been installed at various businesses through this initiative due to popular demand by members of the community. Also, due to the high rate of bike theft seen in 2016 (447 reported cases of stolen bikes according to WIVB), Brown urged the community centers to set up "bike-safe zones" to limit the number of stolen bikes in the future.

"While we are in the process of installing bicycle racks, we will be asking every community center to set up bike-safe zones, either outside the center or inside the center, where children's bicycles can be watched," Brown said. "[The bikes] can be kept safe, so that they don't have to worry about their bicycles being stolen when they come to a city or city-funded community center."

Brown also took the opportunity to remind parents and children of helmet safety while riding their bikes, and that kids under the age of 14 are legally required to wear a helmet.

"Today, we're urging all children 14 years old and under, by law, they must wear helmets when they ride their bicycles," said Brown. "We want to make sure that parents know that their children who are younger than 14, must wear bicycle helmets when they ride their bicycles even in front of the house."
