CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WBEN) - Plans are underway for Cheektowaga to have its own Boys & Girls Club.

The Boys & Girls Club provides educational programming and opportunities for youth is eyeing the Alexander Community Center in Cheektowaga as a future site because of its under-utilized building which features a gymnasium, kitchen, cafeteria, computer lab, and recreational rooms.

New York State is fronting $100,000 for operational funding.

"It really is ideal not for what it has internally but for where it's located in this particular town," Assemblywoman Monica Wallace told reporters on Thursday. "There really is a need for a facility like this and this is an ideal spot for that facility because of its accessibility for the communities nearby."

"For over 83 years we've had a Boys & Girls Club in the Depew and Lancaster communities," Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Dave Hoch said. "I've seen them work. I've seen what we produce...This project will be done."

Hoch said anyone can join the club for a fee, even if you live outside the area. They hope to have upwards of 100 children in the community attend the Boys & Girls Club.

Club officials hope to have the Boys & Girls Club up and running by September 2020.
