Authorities Find Body in Niagara River in Tonawandas After Lengthy Search

Search ends on Wednesday morning


North Tonawanda, NY (WBEN) - The body of a swimmer who went missing in North Tonawanda has been recovered by authorities, who have been searching the waters near Tonawanda Island since Tuesday afternoon.

North Tonawanda police confirm that a male body was recovered Wednesday morning. 

On Tuesday, eyewitnesses heard calls for help, and spotted two men in front of the Tonawanda Island Launch Club. One man was able to get out of the water, but was unable to get the other out.

Authorities then began searching around Smith Boys Marina and the Tonawanda Launch Club for several hours Tuesday evening before calling off the search for the night.

North Tonawanda's fire chief said the search and rescue mission had become a recovery mission by the end of Tuesday evening.
