BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - Area dignitaries highlighted the progress along Buffalo's Outer Harbor on Wednesday afternoon.

"Work is underway on a $5 million project creating Buffalo's next destination featuring a greenway trail, bike park, great lawn, and overlook, all of which will bring people closer to nature and to the water's edge," Congressman Brian Higgins said. "The project, transforming 40 acres of Outer Harbor land into a recreational designation is set to open next spring."

Funding came from the Buffalo Billion, the licensing resettlement with the New York Power Authority, the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation. plus federal and local funding.

"A decade ago, Fuhrmann Boulevard was a difficult to find, crumbling, one-way street, adjacent to vacant or abandoned land of little interest to the public or anyone else," Higgins added. "Since 2008, nearly $121 million of federal, state, and New York Power Authority and local funding has been invested into Buffalo's new Outer Harbor which features an interconnected networks of parks, trails, and public places."
