BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo police say a pedestrian was struck and killed by one of its cruisers as an officer responded to a call.

Capt. Jeff Rinaldo says the accident happened about 6:30 a.m. Friday, just before dawn. A six-year veteran officer was alone in a marked police car when he struck a woman in her 60s.

Rinaldo says an investigation involving the state police is underway that will determine whether the police car's emergency lights were on and where the woman was when she was struck. Her body remained in the middle of the road, covered with a white sheet, as investigators arrived.

The woman is believed to be a resident of the north Buffalo neighborhood where she died. Neither her name, nor that of the police officer, has been released.
