NEW YORK (AP) — The top uniformed officer of the New York City Fire Department has been relieved of his duties amid an investigation into accusations of "inappropriate behavior."

FDNY Deputy Commissioner Frank Gribbon said Thursday Chief James Leonard has been placed on modified assignment.

Chief of Operations John Sudnik is now the acting chief of the department.

Gribbon did not go into further detail about the accusations against Leonard.

Leonard was appointed to the post in 2014, and he has been with the fire department since 1979.
