FIRE ISLAND, N.Y. (AP) — A police officer came to the rescue after a Pennsylvania woman lost her $20,000 engagement while visiting a Long Island beach.

Suffolk County police say they got a call from the frantic woman who was staying at a home on Atlantique Beach on Fire Island on Saturday.

A police officer looked everywhere for the ring, including the home and beach, but turned up nothing.

The officer then asked Marine Bureau Officer Edmund McDowell to bring his own personal metal detector.

On Sunday, McDowell set up a grid pattern on the beach where the woman had been sitting. After about 10 minutes of searching he found the ring.

Police say a friend plans to deliver the ring to the relieved owner in Pennsylvania Sunday night.
