LA Mayor Garcetti skips 2020 and big-name Democratic field

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti won't seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, saying he wants to finish his job at City Hall.

Garcetti told reporters Tuesday that L.A. "is where I want to be." He had been flirting with entering the presidential race for months. But by stepping away from possible contention, he avoids entering a growing field of bigger names, among them a fellow California Democrat, Sen. Kamala Harris.

Other challenges the low-key mayor in his second term would have faced include managing a city of 4 million while mounting a national campaign in states where he is virtually unknown.

Only recently, Garcetti had suspended his consideration of a campaign during a teachers strike, a sign of the diversions that would come with trying to be a mayor-candidate.
