Amherst Teen Caught Driving Over 100mph on Thruway

Faces Speeding, Felony Aggravated DWI & Violating Leandra's Law

Hamburg, N.Y. (WBEN) - A 19 year old Amherst man was arrested Tuesday night for operating his vehicle more than 100 mph on the New York State Thruway in the Town of Hamburg.

Deputies spotted Macayl Kunkle when he passed a marked Sheriff's vehicle.

Kunkle was given field sobriety tests.  He registered a BAC level more than twice the legal limit. 

Kunkle and a 15 year old passenger were taken to the North Collins substation where the 15 year old was picked up by a parent.

According to Sheriff Deputies, Kunkle is charged with felony aggravated DWI and for violating Leandra's Law for having an underage passenger.  He is also facing reckless driving and reckless endangerment.  Kunkle was caught drinking alcohol in a vehicle on a highway, speeding, operating a vehicle without insurance and several other vehicle and traffic violations.

Macayl Kunkle was taken to the Erie County Holding Center on $750 dollars bail and later released. 

Deputies Rogers and Hyde are credited with making the traffic stop.
