Excessive speed believed to be a factor

Albion, N.Y. (WBEN) - New York State Police are investigating a fatal overnight crash in Orleans County that claimed the life of a high school senior.

Police report the rollover collision occurred on Eagle Harbor Road in the town of Albion just after 2am Tuesday.

The on scene investigation revealed that the 2008 Chevrolet Impala occupied by four males, all students at Albion High School, left the east shoulder going into the ditch becoming airborne, striking a utility pole with the roof.  One of the passengers was pronounced at the scene, Brennan M. Moody, 17 of Kent, NY.  The 18-year-old operator and front passenger were treated for injuries at Strong Memorial Hospital.  Mercy Flight took the other 17-year-old rear passenger to Erie County Medical Center for serious injuries.  Excessive speed believed to be a factor in this collision.

"It's an on going investigation," said State Police Trooper James O'Callaghan. "We always draw blood to see if driving under the influence is a factor. We don't believe it is. But we do believe that excessive speed was the primary factor in the crash," he said.
Moody is a senior at Albion High School.

Albion School Superintendent Michael Bonnewell issued the following statement to families in the Albion School district:

I am heartbroken to report four of our seniors were in a car accident that took the life of Brennan Moody.  Three others are at hospitals. Please keep them in your thoughts.

Be assured that counselors, staff and clergy will be at the high school for students and parents to drop in if needed.  We also have staff available at our other buildings for all of our students.

This is the second fatal crash involving a teen in Western New York this week, a point that did not go unnoticed by Trooper O'Callaghan. "It's extremely unfortunate that we've had 2 fatalities in a very short amount of time. School has not even ended yet. We need parents to sit down with their kids to go over this stuff.  It may not be your school, but put yourself in the shoes of these families.  Parents really need to sit down with young drivers and discuss the dangers and importance of driving, especially with multiple people in the car.  These are the 100 deadliest days of Summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day," said O'Callaghan.

On Saturday morning, 18 year old Eddie Travis, a Frontier High School Senior, was killed on a crash on Southwestern Boulevard in West Seneca.  Travis will be laid to rest Wednesday.
