Buffalo, NY (WBEN) A former FBI special agent in charge says agents are reeling from the firing of James Comey as FBI director, but will continue focusing on their work.

"After they get over the shock, and after talking to current and recently retired agents, morale is going to take a hit," says Peter Ahearn. "It's a very sad day, and law enforcement will miss the leadership of Director Comey." Ahearn adds the firing could have been handled much better, and believes the timing could have been better.

Ahearn notes agents will continue their investigations, especially the investigation into possible Russian meddling in the presidential election. "They're really intent on looking at all angles, including potential criminal violations. They're working toward that," says Ahearn. "The bigger issue is whether anything in the Russian case will be looked at if anything is found, and that's why you're hearing calls for an independent prosecutor."

Ahearn says confidence among the rank and file is shaky on whether the Justice Department will look into any findings.
