BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) – The planned African American Veterans Monument at the Buffalo & Erie County Naval & Military Park took its next step today in fundraising efforts with the announcement of a $200,000 contribution from Delaware North and M&T Bank.

The joint grant brings the fundraising efforts to $1.27 million, leaving the project just another $230,000 from reaching its financial goal.

“We’ve been working on this monument for two years,” Warren Galloway, Chairman of the African American Veterans Monument, said. “Every other Wednesday we’ve been meeting and it’s just been growing and growing and growing.”

The monument will be the nation’s first monument dedicated solely to African-American veterans and service members. It will feature 12 black concrete pillars, of standing ten feet, to represent each of of the military conflicts that have occurred.

Last month, the site of the monument held its groundbreaking ceremony. Construction is expected to be complete by next summer.
