AMHERST, N.Y. (WBEN) - AAA of Western New York and area police agencies are reminding you to be careful on the roadways as the 2019-2020 school year approaches.

AAA held its annual "School's Open-Drive Carefully" campaign in an effort to help reduce the number of school-related pedestrian injuries and fatalities.

"It's not just in the morning when people are heading to work and heading to school," Elizabeth Carey of AAA said. "The statistics show that one of the deadliest times of day is from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., when kids are out playing after school and are struck by vehicles."

New York State averages nearly 300 pedestrian deaths each year.

Most school districts in Western New York begin classes next week.
