BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - There are 221 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Erie County as of Thursday evening.

Of those confirmed cases, five people have died while nine people have fully recovered.

Buffalo and Amherst remain the two areas more heavily hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Buffalo has 54 cases while Amherst has 45. Health officials said they expect anywhere from 50 percent to 80 percent of county residents will ultimately contract the illness.

There are 31 people who are in the hospital with the virus.

However, testing is not widely available. Health Commissioner Gale Burstein said vulnerable populations like the elderly, individuals with underlying conditions, and people with special needs are being given priority over the general public. Additionally, essential personnel like health care workers and law enforcement will also receive priority for testing.
