East Aurora, NY (WBEN) A 12 year old boy was rescued by lifeguards during a field trip to a community pool in the Town of Aurora.

East Aurora Police Chief Shane Krieger says rescue crews arrived to find three lifeguards reviving the boy who was found in the deep end of the pool. The boy was taking part in the Park and Pool Day at East Aurora Middle School. "One of the lifeguards jumped in and got the boy out of the water, and another lifeguard began rescue breaths. I believe they only needed a couple before the boy regained consciousness," says Krieger. He says the boy was underwater just enough to become concerned.

Krieger says the boy was taken to Oishei Children's Hospital. "He was conscious and alert and a little scared, but it looked like he was doing ok," says Krieger. Krieger says it appears kids were just playing and "the boy may have taken a mouthful of water that caused him to go unconscious," says Krieger.

Krieger says the lifeguards did exactly what they were supposed to do.

Krieger says it appears to be just a bad accident, and there's no suspicion of foul play.

East Aurora Schools issued this statement:

An incident occurred this morning during a Middle School field trip at the community pool.  It is the District’s understanding that the student involved was conscious and alert when transported to the hospital for evaluation.  The safety of our students is paramount and we are grateful to the lifeguards and to East Aurora’s first responders for their quick action and professionalism.
